The Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra presents its Spring Concert, a free event open to the public, at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
The PYSO, under the baton of Music Director Jack Taylor, will perform Johann Strauss' “Radetsky March,” Richard Meyer's “Of Glorious Plumage” and “American Rhapsody,” and Robert W. Smith's “The Illiad.”
The PYSO String Ensemble, conducted by Anna Lim, will perform Norman Leyden's “Serenade for Strings” and Antonin Dvorak's “New World Symphony, 4th Movement ‘Finale,’" arranged by Richard Meyer.
The PYSO Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Victor Aguilar, will perform Rimsky-Korsakov's “Procession of the Nobles,” arranged by Jay Bocook, Elliot Del Borgo's “Gaelic Rhapsody,” Larry Clark's “Cartoon Symphony,” and will join the String Ensemble on Dvorak's New World Symphony.
Those attending the Spring Concert will be able to donate to a $10,000 matching grant gift made by Richard P. and Jane Roe of Pasadena toward the PYSO’s trip to the International Youth Music Festival and Competition in Vienna in July.
This is the second time the PYSO has been invited to the music festival. The PYSO is considered among the best youth orchestras in Southern California. This ensemble is comprised of talented middle school students from grades six through nine drawn from 52 area schools that have received advanced instruction and challenging music opportunities through a rigorous program that emphasizes ensemble playing and includes a minimum of three concerts a year.
The Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra's Spring Concert is free at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium box office, 300 E. Green St., Pasadena. For more information about the PYSO, call (626) 793-7172.
